• The 1979 vintage is one of my all-time favorites in Champagne. There may be other years that are more dramatic or more impressive, but 1979 has a particular combination of intensity, energy, harmony, acid balance and mineral expression that gets me every time. The wines have also lasted very well, and while most examples are mature today, they continue to offer a great deal of pleasure.

    Recently I tasted two notable ‘79s, both of which reflected the vintage in their own ways. The first was at Vilmart & Cie., on a visit with a group of friends. After tasting through a remarkable and copious lineup of wines, Laurent Champs generously opened a bottle of 1979 Grand Cellier, made by his father, René Champs.
