• Champagne René Geoffroy 2002 Volupté

    Among my Christmastime libations was this lovely bottle of 2002 Volupté by René Geoffroy, generously served to me by my friend Brooklynguy. The 2002 vintage is undoubtedly one of the finest of the contemporary era, but many champagnes are still a little closed, and it's a vintage that will reward the patient.

    We, not being patient, happily opened the bottle. It turns out that the wine is at a lovely point of drinking, having been disgorged in January of 2006. Volupté is always based heavily on chardonnay (the 2002 is 78 percent chardonnay and 22 percent pinot noir), and nearly seven years after disgorgement, the wine's components are beginning to meld together
