• Alexandre Chartogne of Champagne Chartogne-Taillet

    The other day I was reminded of a story that Alexandre Chartogne of Chartogne-Taillet once told me about his flock of sheep. He lets these roam in his vineyards, where they act as natural lawnmowers, eating the grass and keeping the cover crops in check.

    Things haven't always gone so smoothly, however. Alexandre recalls an incident that occurred on the very first day that the sheep arrived:

    "The night that I put my sheep out in the vineyards of Merfy, they escaped.
