• Bérèche et Fils 2009 Coteaux Champenois Ormes Rouge Les Montées

    This weekend I had a sneak preview of Raphaël Bérèche’s 2009 Coteaux Champenois, which he only just bottled at the beginning of May. Besides being the first release of a new, single-vineyard wine, this bottling is significant as half of the proceeds will go to the Red Cross to aid earthquake victims in Japan. "Japan is a country that has been very important to us," says Bérèche, "and we wanted to do something to help."

    The wine comes from a 0.3-hectare parcel on limestone and sand called Les Montées, in the village of Ormes, which is where Bérèche traditionally sources grapes for his rosé. It’s an old parcel, planted in 1965, an
