• 1999 Salon Blanc de Blancs Le Mesnil

    In April, Salon released the 1999, only the 37th vintage ever made by the house. On the face of it, the idea that Salon would make a wine from this warm, low-acid vintage seems a little surprising, considering how discriminating their standards are (keep in mind that they declined to make a 1975 or 1989). I was surprised, at least, and I’ll admit that I was a bit skeptical the first time that I tasted it, several months ago.

    Even Alain Terrier, former chef de cave and the man ultimately responsible for the creation of the 1999, concedes that it’s unexpected: “[The 1999 vintage] was overly likeable and simple,” he says, “exactly the opposite of what we seek
