• 1973 Cristal, Champagne Louis Roederer

    There’s something special about drinking a wine from your birth year. There weren’t a lot of regions that made good wines in my year: Rioja was successful, and the Mosel Valley reasonably so. It was a stellar vintage for Ruster Ausbruch (good luck finding some). And Champagne had a pretty decent harvest as well.

    I’ve been fortunate to have drunk a wide range of 1973 champagnes over the years, and most have been superb, although some might be a little past their best today. Seeing as I celebrated my 40th birthday earlier this year, I took special note of the ‘73s that crossed my path in 2013.
